Charcoal on paper
From the exhibition Between Forms
There are periods of transition when the question isn't simply what do I do next? but who am I becoming?
Between Selves sits within that liminal space.
The face is partially formed and partially absent. One side emerges through the charcoal while the other seems to disappear back into the paper. The figure is recognisable, but incomplete — caught somewhere between what has been and what has yet to take shape.
This work began around the experience of decision-making paralysis, but I increasingly see it as something deeper than an inability to make a choice.
Sometimes decisions become difficult because the self making them is also changing.
The familiar version of ourselves may no longer fit, while the person we are becoming isn't yet clear enough to trust. There can be uncertainty about what we want, where we belong, or even which parts of ourselves we want to carry forward.
That in-between state can feel deeply uncomfortable. There is no firm identity to return to and no fully formed new one waiting on the other side.
Within Between Forms, Between Selves occupies that threshold.
Not lost.
Not arrived.
Halfway there.
